Homosexuality and the Church

Same sex or homosexuality as the case may be is specifically condemned in the Bible. Both the Old and New Testament see it as a terrible sin against the natural order as ordained by God. In fact it is seen as a sin punishable by death and eternal damnation. No matter what hermeneutical or exegetical tool we employ, we cannot twist the fact.One other major argument has also being postulated. That is, homosexuals are naturally endowed by their sex orientation just as heterosexuals are naturally endowed to be heterosexual. This they said is the new discovery in the field of science and psychology. James Nelson says that ‘The majority of homosexuals do not appear to have a meaningful choice concerning their orientation any more then do the great majority of heterosexuals’ (Nelson 1977, 7). They further claimed that homosexuality is a gift just like left-handedness.

Being truthful, if we agree with the above statement, we will discover that very soon murderers, adulterers, robbers, and those who engage in bestiality will see their acts as natural endowment and gift that they cannot resist. The Bible clearly says ‘walk in the spirit that you may not fulfill the desires of the flesh’ (Rom. 8: 5). The priority should not be whether a homosexual is willing to change or not but, if homosexuality is right or wrong? It is clear that the Bible condemned it like every other sin that demands repentance. If the Bible demands repentance, them it demands a change that is possible. If a murderer could change or repent then a ‘gay’ or homosexual could change too. With the word of God there is no double standard.

Concerning left-handedness, there is no place in the Bible where left-handedness was condemned. Instead, it was seen as an ability for strength and accuracy (Jug. 3: 15- 22). The Bible did not see left-handedness the same way it sees homosexuality. Therefore, there is no justifiable comparison between the two. According to the Bible, homosexuality is an abomination, period!

This is how Greg Bahnsen puts it, ‘consider, then what God says in His Infallible Word about homosexuality. It violates His Holy Law, representing a departure into abominable sin and shameless error. It is dishonorable, degrading, and depraving. These are not the judgment of some narrow-minded, uneducated, overzealous, modern-day crusaders who are drunk with rhetoric. These are the judgment of the ne only, living true God, whose holiness, wisdom, and truth are flawless. Man who was created by God in His own image, ought to reflect the purity of His Maker in thought, word, and deed. …homosexuality is unworthy of him as God’s images’ (Bahnsen 1978, 58- 60).

The Church or whosoever wants to look to the Bible for answer on homosexuality should know that Scripture cannot be interpretively shaped to fit the contours of sin. The Bible’s teaching is clear; Homosexuality is sin.
